Getting to Zero Waste
With new PPE and COVID-19 safety measures, damaged recycling streams, rising population rates, and consumerism at the highest it’s ever been, we are seeing more waste in the city than ever. Given the current climate crisis, we simply cannot afford to wait — we need to change our current behaviours and move quickly toward sustainable lifestyles and stop producing so much waste.
The City of Vancouver has a long-term strategic vision of Going Zero Waste 2040. It is a huge, important undertaking that we truly believe possible, but in order to get there, we need to take action, now, and it’s going to take all of us to make it a reality. This two-day event served as a jumping-off point on our city’s journey to becoming zero waste.
Participating Brands
If you want the best, you have to compete with the best. Meet the brands that stepped up to battle it out for Vancouver’s zero waste future.
LET’S GO ZERO CONFERENCE
Information is power. Day 1 was a virtual educational pre-conference and workshops aimed at arming the teams with everything they need to know about why we should go zero waste. Cross-pollinated workshops informed, educated, and introduced teams to impact-driven subject matter experts in their community.
STRATEGY HACK-A-THON FOR GOOD
Day 2 saw the action kick off, with the official Strategy Hack-A-Thon for Good. Each team was led through an all-day session by a dedicated top design thinking facilitator who shepherded teams through the problem statement and assisted in uncovering brilliant and innovative solutions to help achieve a Zero Waste Vancouver. Teams prepared to present their final solutions in a big idea pitch at the end of the day, with a final winner announced in a digital Brand Battle Award Night event later that evening.
BRAND BATTLE AWARD NIGHT
With a day of hard work behind them, it’s time to relax. The teams moved into the Interactive Kumo Space networking social and await the top nominations. Live virtual music and top three pitches were revealed at the Brand Battle Award Night ahead of the winning team announcement.
